Molasses

The lunar cycle,

Lasts days.

Anchoring us,

To this very moment.

There’s being,

In momentary passing.

Let my patience be,

As slow as molasses.

Let its sweetness,

Trickle down from Heaven.

Drenching the furrows,

Upon my brow.

Molasses comes from the source collection First Steps After Reception which was written between November 2023 and November 2024. At a few pivotal crossroads in my life, that being my initiation into spiritual practice, poetry, starting the process of healing, and graduation from highschool.

In fact, Molasses was one of my first poems ever written, in fact the stanza, “Let my patience be, \ As slow as molasses” is such an artifact (surviving rounds of editing). The idea of  molasses comes further back, from an experience in Grade 8. Where I learned about the Great Molasses Flood in a science class.

I’m not too sure why this lesson stuck with me, even surviving a global pandemic and personal struggles which struck months later… but it did. And for whatever reason when I first began writing poetry, The Great Molasses Flood came to me, and I wrote about it.
